This was originally intended to simply be a course blog for my LASA Great Ideas/ Humanities course. Now it is something more. I am leaving LASA for the unknown and it would mean a lot to me to keep this blog going so that we can, as an intellectual community, continue to share ideas and discuss issues.

Ok here's what I've been up to. Part the first
Ok, I know I haven't written in a dog's age, and I know everyone is suffering Odum withdrawals. However, know that there is "busy" and there is "just started a new job, had to buy all new stuff to outfit a new apartment and just moved to the middle east and have no idea how anything works busy." So I miss and love you all and cut me some slack.
So we leave Houston on August 3rd and arrive in Abu Dhabi some 16 hours later. The flight was uneventful. Read a book, watched "Fast Five" basically ennui in a can. Once we got to Abu Dhabi we were met at the airport by representatives from Nirvana travel who would be coordinating all of our plane tickets, visa applications, orientations and apartment placements. We got through customs no problem, no strip searches or anything. We did have an unusual situation involving getting an eye scan. Once we got through customs we were taken into a room where five or six Emirati guys were sitting around drinking tea watching a six or seventh Emirati guy scan people's retinas with a very expensive, Blade Runner looking machine. There were a least four other machines in the room unused and at least two hundred expats waiting to be told if they were a replicant or not. This definitely set the stage for how most administrative matters are handled here. A large amount of expensive equipment is manned by a large number of locals who choose to ignore most of the equipment and operate at about twenty five percent efficiency. It's frustrating but if you have the mindset that allows for you to just flow with it it's tolerable. I usually spend these times reading, playing on the iPad or making up "backstories" for the people around me.
Once we get out of the airport we are taken to our hotel. They've put us at the Yas hotel, a five star, super luxury hotel about forty minutes out of Abu Dhabi. As you can tell from the picture above the place is pretty awesome looking. It has a steel shell covering the two wings of the hotel that forma vague Y shape. This shell is covered in lights that change colors periodically. The interior is designed in a sort of Star Trek/ Hospital/ Law firm lobby look, and the staff all wear jump suits straight from your most coherent retro-futro dreamscapes. It is all a VERY Albert Speer on psychedelics kind of vibe. The room is very nice, the staff is very accommodating, everyone goes to their rooms and passes out. Or do they? It being about 2 am in Abu Dhabi that makes it about 5 pm Austin time. So i am wide awake all night and essentially sleep all day. This goes on for about a week after which I finally start to get my head straight.
But, you ask, what of all the activities and preparations that you have to take care of when you get there? You know, for school? Or your visas? Or you and Vico's apartment. Yeah, there was none of that. We were just left alone for days until somebody sent a message to our television telling us about an orientation we had to attend and that we had to BRING COPIES AND HE ORIGINAL OF OUR PASSPORTS
Anyway, I have to grade now. Enjoy the cold weather I am horribly envious. Next time...

Advice to the Men of LASA

1. Get rid of the cargo shorts. They literally went out of style in the early 2000s.
2. If you MUST wear shorts (I suggest wearing solid color, flat front, slim fit khakis in darker brown, khaki, gray, and a light blue. Look at Bonbos.com for great pants if you've stopped growing), anyway shorts. Take a couple pairs of slacks (flat front only! Pleats are forbidden from now until the end of time) that fit you well but you no longer need, or go to savers and get some, take them to the tailor and have them cut as shorts. They will be slimmer than most shorts and that will look a lot better.
3. Jeans. Skinny jeans are for girls and for guys who weigh less than 150 lbs and share clothes with their girlfriends. Levis 514 Slim Straight. Buy dark washes and when you wash them wash them inside out so that they stay dark. I suggest two to three pair.
4. Shirts. You will need the following solid color shirts: long sleeve oxfords: 2-3 white with pin point collars (buy metal collar stays), 1 lighter pink, 1 light blue, 1 light purple, 1 with thin blue stripes on a white background, 1 black, 1 green. Ask Mo what "season" you are and that will help you decide if you look better in warmer or cooler color schemes. You will need at least three short sleeve polo shirts, don't but American Eagle, Abercrombie, Hollister, Tommy Hilfiger, or some such horrible brand, also don't buy Polo brand, everyone has polo brand and you don't want to look like everyone. I would go with Penguin (Munsingwear), Le Tigre, Fred Perry or my favorite Lacoste. You will need 1 black, 1 Blue (go with Royal blue it stands out a bit more), and 1 White. I also suggest finding a vintage Fila or Sergio Tacchini tennis shirt somewhere, it will add flair to a jeans and flip flops (always decent flip flops, think Aldo not Old navy) look. IT SHOULD GO WITHOUT SAYING THAT ALL SHIRST SHOULD BE SLIM, MODERN, OR ATHLETIC CUT, even if you have a couple pounds on you if the shirt fits well you'll look slimmer. I’ve always struggled with weight being built more like a brick than a flagpole. One of the reasons that you’ll need a good tailor is that designers design nice clothes for impossible sizes. Also, never ever wear the collar up unless you’re ironically dressed like a moron for Halloween.
5. Pants. First off, wear pants to school everyday. School is your job, you get to dress casual at your job, but it's a job nonetheless. All your pants will need to be slim straight NOT SKINNY!!!! Go for timeless style and high quality and your wardrobe will last a good long while. You will need 2 pair of flat front black dress slacks (don't wear these to school, it'll look like you're going to recital or something), 1 pair flat front gray slacks, no cuffs, 1 flat front navy, 1 flat front white (trust me), 1 flat front dark brown. These pants should be wrinkle-free cotton and you need to learn how to iron them so that you have either the traditional crease down the front of the leg, or so that the front of the leg is flat. I prefer Perry Ellis for pants, the outlet in Round Rock always has decent sales. SHOPPING TIP: CALL STORES AND FIND OUT WHEN THEIR STOCK COMES IN, WHAT DAY OF THE WEEK OR MONTH, THEN GO THE NEXT DAY AS EARLY AS YOU CAN, YOU'LL GET FIRST PICK. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE OF OUTLETS, THRIFT STORES AND PLACES LIKE NORDSTROM RACK, TJ MAXX, ROSS, MARSHALLS AND NIEMAN MARCUS LAST CALL.
6. Shoes and Belts. They should match, no exceptions. Buy your shoes and belts together if possible so you know for a fact that they are matched. You need the following: a pair of brown wing tips (great with slacks of course, but adds flash to a pair of jeans and a button up), a pair of black dress shoes. No squared off toes, those are ridiculous, look for a relatively pointy slip on, or a capped toe lace-up. You may be tempted to go for the low fashion boot, but you're not quite ready for that. You also need a pair of fashion sneakers. I think you already have some cool blue Adidas, but you also can't go wrong with Asics Mexico 66 (white), You'll need loafers a pair of brown Sperry top-siders, and a pair of navy blues is about it. You need a pair of black leather sandals, and a pair of brown leather sandals, no Birkenstocks or any horrible thing like that; you're not at a Phish show. The tell tale sign of good sandals is that they have a VERY small heel. Also go to KG and get a cheap pair of white Steve Madden loafers but don't wear them with your white pants! Wear them with jeans and a polo with a white belt. Also, because you're in Texas you'll need a pair of cowboy boots. There's no need to go fancy here, cowboy boots are meant to break in and look a little worn. Go to Shepler's and pick out a pair with a walking heel and a reasonable point, no rounded toes.
7. Suits: Eventually someone will die/ get married/ have a fancy party/ you'll get a job interview so you'll need a small stable of suits. All should be athletic cut and fit pretty well off the rack. The reason I say pretty well is two-fold. One, only a small percentage of the male population can buy suits off the rack and have them fit perfectly (it's basically Roger Federer and Daniel Craig that's it), and two, you're going to have them tailored anyway. You need a black suit, a light gray suit, a tan suit, and if you tan well and develop some swagger, a white suit. White suits are tricky to pull off. You truly have to believe that you belong in a white suit to rock a white suit. If there's any doubt, just forget it. You will also need a navy suit with LIGHT pinstripes. This is your "interview suit." It's very conservative, very bland, but make sure your tailor cuts it well. Department stores rip you off for suits so avoid them. Order Bianca Brioni suits from Amazon. It's the secondary brand from Brioni who makes the best suits in the world. They're a fantastic deal and of very high quality. Don't worry about buying them online you'll tailor them anyway.
8. Accessories. Up until now I've been giving you a primer on "timeless" or "classic" style. The reason for this is that you should buy very high quality items, but only the essentials. They will last you longer, sometimes they come with repair warranties, and it will keep you from shopping, which is a waste of time and usually tempts you into buying stuff you don't need. Anyway, WITH THE QUALIFIED EXCEPTION OF WATCHES, accessories are where you can buy cheap and trendy items to add to your basic fashion palette. I'm thinking here of hats (baseball hats are for playing sports, working outside, and watching sports, they're juvenile and it took me a long while to come to that realization, but I'm a better man for it). You probably have hair (more on that later) so you don't really need a hat, but if you must, go with a Panama (again this is something that you have to really own, so if you don't know if you can, you can't). You need a nice leather wallet. You need a necklace with a pendant representing something meaningful to you. You need a gold or silver toned (your preference) dress watch (nice, but because you're a student we're talking Citizen not Rolex). This should only be worn with suits or when you dress up a little. Don't get any watch that's "nautical" (unless you actually sail or spend time on a boat) or chronograph or any of that crap. Buy a nice watch that's modern or classic whichever way you want to go. Nixon, Fossil, and Invicta are good choices. You need a brown leather-strapped watch for more casual outfits (this is your everyday watch). A black leather-strapped watch to match your black, gray, and the like.
Lastly you need a sport watch because you, my boy, are going to need to exercise. I'm not trying to be moralistic, I need a lot of body work myself. I'm just speaking facts. If you dedicate to a workout/ exercise schedule your clothes will fit better, you'll feel better physically, as well as about yourself, AND you'll look better (more on this later).
Anyway, back to accessories. You need two handkerchiefs one in your front pocket, with subtle embroidery of your last initial, and one in your back pocket that's plain. The one in the front is for "her." She sneezes, she has something in her eye or at the corner of her mouth, she has something on her clothes, she's crying. It doesn't matter who it is, you extend this courtesy to EVERY WOMAN whether you are interested in her or not (you also open car doors, doors in general, give up your seat on busses and trains, nod your head and say "ma'am" as you pass by them, if she drops something bend at the knees and pick it up for her, in short learn etiquette from forty years ago. Women are capable, smart, and equal to men in all ways that matter, but the small touches of chivalry are greatly appreciated, or at least noticed positively. You look classy). The one in the back is for you, DO NOT BLOW YOUR NOSE IN THE HANDKERCHIEF LIKE YOU WOULD IN A KLEENEX, wipe your nose when it's runny, fold it so that the snotty part is on the inside so that you can use it to wipe your mouth after eating.
Rings: Wedding rings only. As an Aggie it somewhat pains me to say this but class rings are usually gaudy and gaudy never works except for Halloween and Carnival. Nope only a wedding ring, no "promise rings" and for God's sake no "men's engagement rings" or “purity rings,” you would be better off becoming a eunuch than wear one of those (and if she asks you to wear one, she's not the girl you want to marry, trust me).
Socks are a must, actually not really an accessory, except with the sandals and the top-siders of course.
Buy two colognes (and don’t use too much) one that is lighter and has a touch of citrus for the late Spring and Summer, one that is heavier with notes of tobacco and/or leather for Fall and Winter.
You will also need a nice pen, I would opt for the Cross ATX (about 40 bucks) which fits nicely in your front pocket (because you should always have a pen and not having one makes people feel like you are disorganized and unreliable), when you get to Rolex Watch/ Dunhill Lighter territory then go for the Mont Blanc Generation. My Grandfather gave me one of these when I was your age and I lost it and it breaks my heart every time I think about it.
The next accessory you should have is a nice cigarette lighter. DON'T GET ME WRONG, DO NOT SMOKE EVER!!! AND DATE ANYONE WHO SMOKES, IT STINKS, IT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO QUIT ONCE YOU'VE STARTED AND IT WILL KILL YOU SLOWLY, that being said it is probable that you will eventually be in a social situation in which someone is smoking and pulling out a lighter to light someone's cigarette, guy or girl, is a classy move and will be noticed. A plain Zippo will do for now, when you get older and have a better job opt for a Colbari, and if you are well off enough eventually
Sunglasses should match your face. If you have something of a rounded face so go for squared off glasses. If you have a longer face you can pull off aviators. Once again I suggest Ray Ban, but if you want a little more unusual with a classic look go with Randolph Aviators with the chrome finish and the green or blue lenses. At this point just get Ray Ban wayfarer knock offs from Target or someplace, one pair in black, one pair in Tortoise shell. Later, if you feel the need to buy expensive sunglasses (I don’t personally, I like to use sunglasses to complete a “look” that I’ve constructed so it makes more financial sense to buy cheaper brands) I would go with Persol. They have a multitude of styles, they are classy, and they were the choice of Steve McQueen and that usually signals a very high score on the masculinity scale. For those of you with longer faces you could look at the rounder Fendi glasses or Oliver Peoples. Vintage eyewear is also a great option, so keep an eye out on ebay.
As for exercise, DO NOT TAKE YOUR BODY IMAGE CUES FROM MEN’S FITNESS MAGAZINES, those guys are genetically gifted, professional exercisers, and airbrushed. Anyway, you need to do four types of exercises: core, strength, endurance, and sport. For your core you can use balancing balls and the like, however there is no better core exercise than Yoga. For one thing it increases your flexibility and joint strength. It also helps you with “functional strength” which will help you do everyday things that require a little power. For strength, find an experienced mentor who will set you up with a program of free weight workouts that won’t make you a bulky freak, but will give you that lean look that women prefer and is honestly healthier. For endurance, run and swim. Running sucks at first, but after a while it becomes almost meditative and you will find that you can run longer distances and times pretty quickly. If you have some extra pounds, do intervals of long slow runs with short, regular bursts of full-speed sprinting. If you decide to run, go to a running shop and have them suggest shoes that are best for your body and running style. I am a bigger guy and so my all time favorite running shoes are the Brooks Beast. Swimming should not require too much explanation. It’s fun, it works all of your body, and it is a life skill. Some universities (Yale for example) even require you to take a swim test as a prerequisite for graduation). Being an excellent swimmer is a very good skill to have. As for the “sport” section, choose a sport that you enjoy and that you can play well into adulthood. Football and Boxing are great when you’re young, but you can only play football for so long, and if you box too long you’ll get brain trauma that will honestly make you a zombie. I suggest tennis, squash, soccer, baseball, softball, rugby, racquetball, badminton, cycling, hiking, kayaking, water or snow skiing. Notice I did not say golf because while golf is great for making business deals and there is a strong psychological component to the game that develops discipline, it is a common past time for frankly uninteresting people. I want you to be dynamic human beings, not golfers.
As important as exercise is for health, diet is much more of a factor. A vegetarian diet with protein supplementation is the healthiest and most ethical diet available, however I know that this may be too drastic a step. I love a good steak as much as anyone I know. So, keep your portions reasonable in size, eat LOTS of vegetables and fruits (really as much as you can handle), whole grains, natural foods (there’s a lot of research that claims that the obesity epidemic has a lot to do with processed foods). It’s the same message I have with drugs; food and drugs are chemical compounds that you put into your body that affect a metabolic change. That is a really big deal so you need to educate yourself and make wise decisions that will help you live a long life and enjoy the life you’re living.
Hygiene is VERY important and is too often ignored by young men. You need to do the following things in order: In the morning, wash your face with a soap that won’t dry out your skin, floss, brush your teeth, rinse your mouth out with mouthwash, take a shower. While you are in the shower wash EVERYTHING, rinse completely, and shave. Always shave in the shower because the hot water opens your pores and gives you a closer shave. Don’t go cheap on razors, disposable razors are environmentally wasteful and don’t do a good job anyway. I use a Gillette Fusion Proglide Power razor and I like it a lot. After you shower use a non-alcohol based aftershave (unscented), apply lotion to your face and under your eyes (something with at least 15 spf). Nothing that will make your face shiny, that’s a bad look. Trust me on the lotion front. In ten years your pals will have wrinkles around your eyes, and you won’t. Use a good antiperspirant like Mitchum gel (won’t get on your clothes), and a bit of gold bond unscented powder anywhere where you might sweat. I’m not going into any more detail on that last point. Now cologne, spray once on your wrist, rub on the other wrist and then rub both wrists along your jawline, then hold the bottle out at arms length, aim at chest level and give a good solid spray. This is enough, never use more than this, seriously. Keep a little kit with a toothbrush and toothpaste, floss, antiperspirant, small sized cologne, Tide to go, Purell, and hand lotion. Keep this kit in your car, locker, or eventually desk. You never know what will happen in a day.
Hmmmmm, other than that I would advise to spend a lot of time outdoors, get some color. Work on your walk, good posture, chin up, toes facing forward, walk like you have someplace to go, not fast, but not aimlessly either. Work on your handshake, firm but not crushing (indicates overcompensation), look people directly in the eyes when you meet them. Keep your hands out of your pockets and away from your face, When you first meet someone don’t smile immediately after looking them in the eyes allow a smile to grow on your face. It gives them the impression that you’ve seen something positive in them and it makes them act more warmly towards you. Say good morning, good afternoon and good evening or good night to people. Ask people how their day has been and really listen to their answers. Inquire about people’s interests, you can learn a lot about people and people like others who care about their lives. You can fake this, but you’ll be a better man, and a better human being if you actually do care about others. Think before you speak. If you aren’t adding to the conversation it’s better to listen and learn. Don’t ever try to be the expert on a subject. This is a flaw that I grapple with daily. If you have knowledge about a subject, let it flow naturally into the stream of the conversation. Surprise people with your intellect and insight, rather than being bored because you are always filling the air with chatter.
The most important ting you can improve/ develop is your intellect. Make a pact with yourself to read one good book ever two weeks and scan a good newspaper (the Statesman does NOT count, go to the New York Times online), and try to listen to some audio books. I have a hard time finishing books, so I download audio books on subjects that I find interesting or edifying in some way. If you want a great general introduction to almost any subject check out The Teaching Company. It’s a company that hires the best professors in the world to give a course on their subject of expertise. I listen in the car and when I’m laying in bed trying to sleep.
Also, take time (at least 30 minutes a day) to meditate. Meditation is a practice that is found in every religious tradition, so you don’t have to alter your beliefs if you don’t want to. If you have no beliefs it is a great way to open your mind to what’s inside you and it will help you clarify who you really are as a person. It also is good for the physical body. It lowers your stress levels, blood pressure, aids in concentration and mood, and many other things that I can’t think of at this moment. If you want a good book on the subject I suggest The Meditator’s Manual by Ram Dass.
In short, be a man. Men can take care of themselves, the women in their lives, assert their opinions in a forceful yet diplomatic way, are authentic, have integrity, don’t shirk from physically difficult tasks, take risks, measure risks verses rewards, takes care of their money, works hard, says what he means, isn’t afraid to express his feelings, can cry, can be vulnerable with those he trusts, ASKS THE GIRL HE’S INTERESTED IN OUT AND IS OK IF SHE SAYS NO, picks the restaurant on a date, brings her flowers, meets her father looks him in the eyes, shakes his hand and tells him that his daughter is safe with you and that you will get her back before curfew, finds a woman who he can open his soul to and treats her for what she is the most precious gift God ever gave mankind, has at least one nemesis (of equal quality to one’s self) who keep him sharp, has close friends who deserve to BE his friends, isn’t a barfly, cares about where he lives and takes pride in its appearance and amenities, cares about the environment and doesn’t take nature for granted, likes and develops empathy with animals especially dogs and horses, can ride a horse, can dance with confidence, DOES dance with confidence, practices his self defense skills regularly, remembers how to fight like a gentleman (the challenged gets to pick the venue and time), never starts a fight, never runs from a fair fight, never bites, scratches or gouges, never uses a weapon against an unarmed enemy, never ends a fight before victory or defeat is clearly determined, isn’t afraid to take a beating for a woman or a principle, has goals in life, has an overriding purpose that he works towards, retreats into solitude on occasion to reflect and renew, trusts human goodness until proven otherwise, forgives but never fully forgets, knows how to order a meal and how to treat service workers (with respect), makes plans, works through those plans, is generous, is kind, listens to other people’s opinions, makes logical and well-considered arguments, doesn’t waste too much time arguing for the sake of argument, never makes promises he doesn’t do everything to keep, makes sacrifices for friends, family and total strangers, and finally takes responsibility for his thoughts, words, actions, and all the consequences thereof.
Gentlemen, Honor is almost a dead concept in this pathetic culture. Bring it back.
Ladies, if a man doesn’t meet the description above, don’t have a relationship with them. I know you all, and you all deserve the best that the XY chromosome can produce.

More detail on your outline
The Thesis
The most important part of your detailed outline is your statement of your thesis. Now that you've got some ideas down in the brainstorming phase, open a text file or word processing file that will contain your detailed outline. At the top, write "Thesis statement:". After the colon you will write the only well-crafted full sentence that needs to appear in this detailed outline -- your thesis. The thesis statement of your paper should be a one-sentence statement of the argument that you will be making in the rest of the paper. It should state a clear, non-trivial position. It is this position that you will try to persuade your reader of as he/she reads the rest of your paper. It should not be more than one sentence long. Although it is only one sentence, it is probably the most important sentence of your whole paper, so take your time thinking about what you want to argue and crafting the sentence that explains it to the reader. Of course you will be able to revise your thesis as we go along in the paper-writing process, but having a strong thesis to work from can make everything else go more easily.
The Rest of the Outline
For the rest of the outline you may want to use the outline setting in Microsoft Word or just do an outline style yourself. The key thing is that you do not need to be writing full sentences at all and it is better to avoid spending any time on crafting sentences or worrying about if you have chosen exactly the right word.
Your outline should include at least the following sections:
Introduction -- Your introduction will be only one paragraph in your paper, most likely ending with your thesis statement that you've already written. Here you want to include a very small lead up to the thesis that allows the reader to understand both what you are arguing and why it is important. In your outline, all you want to do is include a few bullet points that indicate what you might say to contextualize your thesis for the reader and to show the reader the broader implications or importance of the topic.
Background -- In this section you should have bullets or sub-sections that explain the issue and the points of view of the stakeholders. It is where the empathic argument you have constructed in your podcast will be incorporated into your paper.
Arguments (1,2,3,... perhaps more) -- There should be at least 3 sections that are devoted to arguments that support your thesis. Each argument should be a reason why your thesis is correct. Each argument should be supported by clear, well-documented evidence or reasoning. If there are counter-arguments to an argument, these should be presented and rebutted. Remember that here we are just looking for a sketch, not all the argumentation. So state the argument in a few words and list the evidence, the counter arguments, etc. as briefly as possible too. You will also want to give some thought to the order in which you place your arguments sections. The flow of the paper will depend on this, and this is a good time to try moving around the order of things before you've spent time developing the transitions that you'll use in the actual text of the paper.
Conclusion -- Your conclusion should be a small part of your paper, not a place for introducing many new ideas. However, it is the place where you want to remind your reader or connect your reader to the larger significance of what you've proved in the paper. In your outline this may consist of just a few bullet points of what you'd like to emphasize for your reader as they finish reading.

In your outline, all you want to do is include a few bullet points that indicate what you might say to contextualize your thesis for the reader and to show the reader the broader implications or importance of the topic.
Background -- In this section you should have bullets or sub-sections that explain the issue and the points of view of the stakeholders. It is where the empathic argument you have constructed in your podcast will be incorporated into your paper.
Arguments (1,2,3,... perhaps more) -- There should be at least 3 sections that are devoted to arguments that support your thesis. Each argument should be a reason why your thesis is correct. Each argument should be supported by clear, well-documented evidence or reasoning. If there are counter-arguments to an argument, these should be presented and rebutted. Remember that here we are just looking for a sketch, not all the argumentation. So state the argument in a few words and list the evidence, the counter arguments, etc. as briefly as possible too. You will also want to give some thought to the order in which you place your arguments sections. The flow of the paper will depend on this, and this is a good time to try moving around the order of things before you've spent time developing the transitions that you'll use in the actual text of the paper.
Conclusion -- Your conclusion should be a small part of your paper, not a place for introducing many new ideas. However, it is the place where you want to remind your reader or connect your reader to the larger significance of what you've proved in the paper. In your outline this may consist of just a few bullet points of what you'd like to emphasize for your reader as they finish reading.

You need a place for a thesis statement? Well here you go.
Remember that a thesis statement is an answer to your research question and should be based on evidence that you have gained through, at the very least, viewing and analyzing the film. It should not spring fully formed from the ether. That is, don't just make it up and expect that you can change it whenever you want. Remember that your thesis statement should come out of your research, your research should not come out of the thesis statement.
So post your thesis statement as a comment to this post.

Film Analysis Research Paper
Guidelines:
1. Choose a film you admire from a list of approved films.
2. Study the film by watching it multiple times on a VCR, DVD or online.
3. Choose what kind of film paper you want to write (see the attached guide)
4. Use your analysis of the film as the body of your paper; then add an introductory paragraph, transitions, and a conclusion to shape the paper into a complete essay. (The final product should be between six and eight typewritten pages, double-spaced.)
5. Please don't spend more than one short paragraph describing the film's plot. Assume the reader has seen the film.
6. Please don't base your paper on the director's commentary from a DVD.
7. Please don't choose a film that is studied in class.
8. Please staple your paper and do not place it in a binder of any kind. Please don't turn in computer disks or through email attachment.
Points will be deducted if the paper is: too short, not typed, is handed in late, or is bad in any way.
Your paper will require both a detailed viewing of the film as well as research relating to the film (or some aspect of the film) 10 Sources required (at least 6 must be print sources)
This paper will be graded like any other research paper; the only difference is that you are focusing on film.

Buster goes to the South to claim a family inheritance, and falls in love with the daughter of a longtime rival clan. Sublime silent comedy, one of Buster's best, with a genuinely hair-raising finale. Incidentally, Buster married his leading lady in real life.
Greed (1924)
140 minutes, D: Erich von Stroheim
Powerful adaptation of Frank Norris' novel McTeague, about a simple man whose wife's obsession with money eventually drives him to madness. Even though von Stroheim's film was taken from him, and severly cut by the studio (it originally ran eight hours), this remains a stunning work, one of the greatest of all silent films. The final sequences in Death Valley are unforgettable.
The Gold Rush (1925)

Immortal Chaplin classic, pitting Little Tramp against Yukon, affections of dance-hall girl, whims of a burly prospector. Dance of the rolls, eating leather shoe, cabin tottering over cliff - all highlights of wonderful, timeless comedy. Chaplin re-edited film in 1942; that version, with his narration and music, runs 72m.

Cinematographers Karl Struss and Charles Rosher won Oscars, as did the film for "artistic quality of production." Gaynor also won Best Actress Oscar (shared for her performances in 7th Heaven and Street Angel). Remade in Germany as The Journey to Tilsit. Full title onscreen is Sunrise - A Song of Two Humans.

Definitive monster movie, with Clive as the ultimate mad scientist, creating a man-made being (Karloff) but inadvertently giving him a criminal brain. It's creaky at times, and cries for a music score, but it's still impressive...as is Karloff's performance in the role that made him a star. Long-censored footage, restored in 1987, enhances the impact of several key scenes, including the drowning of a little girl. Based on Mary Shelley's novel. Followed by Bride of Frankenstein.
Trouble in Paradise (1932)

Sparkling Lubitsch confection about two jewel thieves (Marshall and Hopkins) who fall in love, but find their relationship threatened when he turns on the charm to their newest (female) victim. This film is a working definition of the term "sophisticated comedy." Script by Samson Raphaelson and Grover Jones.
King Kong (1933)

Classic version of beauty-and-beast theme is a moviegoing must, with Willis O'Brien's special effects and animation of monster ape Kong still unsurpassed. Duck Soup (1933)

Eye-filling sequel to Frankenstein is even better, with rich vein of dry wit running through the chills. Inimitable Thesiger plays weird doctor who compels Frankenstein into making a mate for his creation; Lanchester plays both the "bride" and, in amusing prologue, Mary Shelley. Pastoral interlude with blind hermit and final, riotous creation scene are highlights of this truly classic movie. Scripted by John L. Balderston and William Hurlbut. Superb adaptation of Sinclair Lewis novel about middle-aged American industrialist who retires, goes to Europe, where he and his wife find differing sets of values, and new relationships. Intelligently written (by Sidney Howard), beautifully filmed, extremely well acted, with Huston recreating his Broadway role. Won Oscar for Interior Decoration (Richard Day). Unusually mature Hollywood film, not to be missed.
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)

Cooper is Longfellow Deeds, who inherits 20 million dollars and wants to give it all away to needy people. Arthur is appealing as the hard-boiled big-city reporter who tries to figure out what makes him tick. Capra won his second Oscar for this irresistible film, written by Robert Riskin (from Clarence Budington Kelland's story "Opera Hat").
Grand Illusion (1937 - French)
117 minutes, D: Jean Renoir
Renoir's classic treatise on war, focusing on French prisoners during WWI and their cultured German commandant. Beautiful performances enhance an eloquent script (by Renoir and Charles Spaak).
Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Stagecoach (1939)

One of the great American films, and a landmark in the maturing of the Western, balancing character study (as disparate passengers travel together on the same stagecoach) and peerless action (in a lengthy Indian attack, featuring Yakima Canutt's famous stuntwork). Also the film that propelled John Wayne to genuine stardom. Mitchell won an Oscar as the drunken doctor, as did the music score. Script by Dudley Nichols, from Ernest Haycox's story "Stage to Lordsburg" (whose plot is reminiscent of Guy de Maupassant's Boule de Suif). Filmed in Ford's beloved Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah border.
Gone With The Wind (1939)

If not the greatest movie ever made, certainly one of the greatest examples of storytelling on film, maintaining interest for nearly four hours. Margaret Mitchell's story is, in effect, a Civil War soap opera, focusing on vixenish Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara, brilliantly played by Leigh; she won Oscar, as did the picture, McDaniel, director Fleming, screenwriter Sidney Howard (posthumously), many others. Memorable music by Max Steiner in this one-of-a-kind film meticulously produced by David O. Selznick.

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (with Mickey Mouse), "The Dance of the Hours" (with dancing hippos and alligators), "Rite of Spring" (dinosaurs stalking the earth), and "A Night on Bald Mountain" (with Chernobog, the personification of evil) are so stunning that they make up for the less compelling sequences. Lawrence of Arabia (1962 - British)

Blockbuster biography of enigmatic adventurer T.E. Lawrence is that rarity, an epic film that is also literate. Loses some momentum in the second half, but still a knockout - especially in 1989 reissue version, which restored many cuts made over the years (and made a few judicious trims in the process). Still, the only way to really appreciate this film is on a big screen. Screenplay by Robert Bolt and Michael Wilson, based on Lawrence's book The Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Seven Oscars include Best Picture, Director, Cinematography (Freddie Young), Score (Maurice Jarre), Editing, and Art Direction. O'Toole's first leading role made him an instant star.

Midnight Cowboy (1969)

Special agent Sheen journeys upriver into Cambodia with orders to find and kill errant officer Brando, leading him (and viewer) on a mesmerizing odyssey of turbulent, often surreal encounters. Unfortunately, film's conclusion - when he does find Brando - is cerebral and murky. Still, a great movie experience most of the way, with staggering, Oscar-winning photography by Vittorio Storaro.

Extraordinarily compelling look at prizefighter Jake La Motta, whose leading opponent outside the ring was always himself. That such an unappealing man could inspire so vivid a portrait is a tribute to the collaboration of Scorsese, De Niro, and writers Paul Schrader and Mardik Martin. There's not a false note in characterization or period detail. De Niro and editor Thelma Schoonmaker won richly deserved Academy Awards.

GoodFellas (1990)

A boy grows up in an Italian-American neighborhood of Brooklyn and dreams of becoming part of the Mob. Fascinating look at the allure - and the reality - of day-to-day life in a Mafia family, based on experiences of Henry Hill (Liotta), who wound up in the Federal witness protection program. The violence is (necessarily) harsh and off-putting, like the film itself at times, but it's brilliantly realized by Scorsese and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus. Major criticism: It goes on too long. Bracco and Oscar winner Pesci stand out in an exceptional cast; that's Scorsese's mother as Pesci's mom. Screenplay by the director and Nicholas Pileggi, based on the latter's book Wiseguy.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
154 minutes, D: Quentin Tarantino
Audacious, outrageous look at honor among lowlifes, told in a somewhat radical style overlapping a handful of separate stories. Jackson and Travolta are magnetic as a pair of hit men who have philosophical debates on a regular basis; Willis is compelling as a crooked boxer whose plan to take it on the lam hits a few detours. (In fact, there are no slackers in this cast.) This voluble, violent, pumped-up movie isn't for every taste - certainly not for the squeamish - but it's got more vitality than almost any other film of 1994. Tarantino is featured onscreen as Jimmy of Toluca Lake. Roger Avary gets costory credit with Tarantino (they won the Screenplay Oscar).
Fargo (1996)

The Coen Brothers put a unique spin on a murder case, layering their story with droll observations about Minnesotans and winding up with a totally disarming comedy! McDormand is terrific as an efficient (and pregnant) police chief with multiple murders on her hands; Macy is equally good as a two-bit schemer who tries to stay cool when he finds himself way over his head in a quicksand of crime. Love that Muzak in the background! Oscar winner for Best Screenplay (Joel and Ethan Coen) and Actress (McDormand).

THE CHALLENGES OF WRITING ABOUT FILM
What's so hard about writing about film? After all, we all "know" movies. Most of us could recite the plot ofIndependence Day with greater ease than we could recite the Declaration of Independence. We know more about the characters who perished on Cameron's Titanic than we know about many of the people who inhabit our own lives.
But it's precisely our familiarity with film that presents us with our greatest writing challenge. Film is so familiar and so prevalent in our lives that we are often lulled into passive viewing (at worst) or into simple entertainment (at best). As a result, certain aspects of a film are often "invisible." Caught up in the entertainment, we sometimes don't "see" the camera work, composition, editing, lighting, and sound. Nor do we "see" the production struggles that accompany every film - including the script's many rewrites, the drama of getting the project financed, the casting challenges, and so on.
However, when your film professors ask you to write about film, it's precisely those "invisible" aspects that they want you to see. Pay attention to the way the camera moves. Note the composition (the light, shadow, and arrangement of things) within the frame. Think about how the film was edited. In short, consider the elements that make up the film. How do they function, separately and together? Also think about the film in the context when it was made, how, and by whom. In breaking down the film into its constituent parts, you'll be able to analyze what you see.
As you analyze and write about film, remember that you aren't writing a review. Reviews are generally subjective: they explore an individual's response to a film and so do not require research, analysis, and so on. As a result, reviews are often both simplistic (thumbs up, thumbs down) and "clever" (employing the pun-driven or sensational turns of phrase of popular magazines). While reviews can be useful and even entertaining pieces of prose, they generally don't qualify as "academic writing."
We aren't saying that your individual and subjective responses to a film are useless. In fact, they can be most informative. Being terrified when you watch The Blair Witch Project can be the first step on the way to a strong analysis. Interrogate your terror. Why are you scared? What elements of the film contribute to your terror? How does the film play with the horror and documentary genres in order to evoke a fear that is fresh and convincing? And so on.

KINDS OF FILM PAPERS
Film Studies is a broad and fascinating field. The variety of its scholarship reflects that. Below are some of the kinds of papers you might be asked to write in a Film Studies course:
Formal Analysis
A formal analysis of a film or films requires that the viewer breaks the film down into its component parts and discusses how those parts contribute to the whole. Formal analysis can be understood as taking apart a tractor in a field: you lay out the parts, try to understand the function and purpose of each one, and then put the parts back together.
In order to do a convincing formal analysis, you'll need to be familiar with certain key terms (outlined for you in the glossary). Returning to the tractor analogy: it's helpful to be able to understand and to use terms like "carburetor" when you take a tractor apart - especially if you hope to explain your process to an onlooker.

Film History
All films are deeply involved in history: they reflect history, influence history, have history. A film like Gone With the Wind not only tells a story of the South during the Civil War, but (more importantly) it reflects the values and ideas of the culture that produced it, and so can be understood as an historical document.
All films are part of our culture's history. They derive from and contribute to historical events. War films, for example, take their substance from historical events. They also influence those events - by influencing wartime audiences to rally behind the troops, or to protest them.
But films also have their own histories:
- All films have production histories, which involve the details of how and why and when they were made. Production problems often (if not always) affect what we see on the screen.
- All films have distribution and release histories: some films are released to different generations of audiences, to wildly different responses; other films are banned because they threaten certain cultural values. (Thailand, for example, banned both The King and I and the recent Anna and the King because, in the estimation of the Thais, the films were disrespectful to their royalty).
- Finally, all films should be understood in the larger context of film history. A particular film might "make" history, through its innovations, or it might reflect certain historical trends.
Ideological Papers
Even films that are made to entertain promote some set of beliefs. Sometimes these beliefs are clearly political, even propagandistic: Eisenstein's Potempkin, for example, is a glorification of Soviet values. Other films are not overtly political, but they still promote certain values: Mary Poppins, for example, argues for the idea that fathers need to take a more active interest in their families.
It's important to remember, when watching a film, that even films whose purpose it is to entertain may be promoting or even manipulating our feelings about a certain set of values. Independence Day, for example, is entertaining, in part, because it plays on our feelings of American superiority and "never say die." An analysis of the film benefits from a consideration of these values, and how they are presented in the film.
Cultural Studies / National Cinemas
Films reflect the cultures and nations in which they were produced. Hollywood films, one might argue, reflect certain things about our nation's culture: our love of distraction, our attraction to adrenaline and testosterone, our need for good to triumph over evil, and our belief that things work out in the end.
Other cultures and nations have different values and so produce different sorts of films. Sometimes these films baffle us. We might watch a French film, for example, and wonder why it's funny. Or we might watch a Russian film and wonder why the director never calls for a close up. These observations are in fact excellent starting places. Consider differences. Find out if these differences reflect something about the national character, or if they reflect trends in the national cinema. You may find that you have something interesting to say.
Discussion of the Auteur
Auteur criticism understands a film as the product of a single person and his vision. In most cases, this person is the director. Auteur criticism is useful because it helps us to understand, for example, what makes a certain film a "Spielberg" film. However, auteur criticism is often based on the erroneous assumption that films are like novels - that is, that one person retains authorship and control.
Film is a collaborative medium. It's important to understand that no one person can control the product. The Director of Photography, the screen writers (often many), the wardrobe and make-up people, the head of the studio - all these and others have a hand in determining the final product of film.
Still, auteur criticism is widely practiced and is useful in helping us to understand the common themes and aesthetic decisions in films by the same director (or producer, or star). Keep in mind, however, that the best of the auteur criticism draws on other sources, like film history or formal analysis, in order to insure that the paper is not simply an examination of the private life or the psychology of the auteur.
PREWRITING STRATEGIES
Before you can write about a film you must, of course, view the film. Accordingly, the best prewriting strategy you can have is to be a careful and observant viewer. However, when viewing a film we don't always have time to study particular images and cameria techniques. This problem is less significant if we have access to videos, which permit us to review a scene again and again. Still, you'll sometimes be asked to write about a film that you'll see only once. How can you prepare yourself so that your observations will be sharp? What knowledge can you bring to a film that will inspire a thoughtful and focused analysis?
THE ELEMENTS OF COMPOSITION
Film is an incredibly complex medium. Just take a look at the credits at the end of any film. Each of the people listed there has contributed something essential to the film's production - from lighting, to sound, to wardrobe, to editing, to special effects. Because there's so much to talk about, you'll have to be selective if you want to write a good, focused essay.
If you are a novice to writing about film, take the time to familiarize yourself with the film terms listed in the attached glossary. Knowing the terms sometimes helps you to see them on the screen. You'll begin to "see" the difference between a cutaway and a jump cut, or between a dissolve and a fade. Make sure you have a working understanding of how all the major components of film - writing, acting, lighting, composition, editing, sound, and so on - work together to create what you see on the screen.
Then, when sitting down to watch a particular film, choose from among these many elements one or two that interest you. Is the editing particularly effective? Focus on that and don't struggle to take note of the lighting. Do you find the director's use of jump cuts innovative? Watch closely when these cuts occur. Perhaps the director has used jump cuts consistently whenever characters are engaged in intimate conversations. What is he trying to convey through this technique?
If you are entirely unfamiliar with a film and aren't sure what you should be looking for, ask your professor. She should be able to point you to those scenes or techniques that deserve special attention.
Annotating Shot Sequences
Whenever you prepare to write a paper, you take notes. However, when analyzing a film, you may want to take a very particular sort of notes in which you annotate a shot sequence or scene.
Annotating a scene involves labeling each shot in a sequence. For example, a scene may begin with an establishing shot, which segues into a dolly shot. The dolly shot comes to rest in a medium shot of the main character, who is looking off frame. Next comes a reverse angle subjective close-up shot, which dissolves into a montage.
Labeling each of these shots - preferably using a system of abbreviations for efficiency's sake - enables you to keep track of the complex sequence of shots. When you review your annotations, you might see a pattern of camera movement and editing decisions (or, on the other hand, some unusual variation in the pattern) that better helps you to understand 1) how the director crafted his film, and 2) why the film has a certain effect on the audience.
Think Beyond the Frame
So far, we've been advising you to consider the formal aspects of a film's composition. However, as we pointed out earlier, you can write about film in several ways. Sometimes you will want to "think beyond the frame," and to consider questions about how the film was made, its historical context, and so on. For example, ask yourself:
Who made the film?
Find out who directed the film, and what other films this director made. If you've seen some of these other films, you'll have a better understanding of the themes and genres that the director is interested in.What is the production history of the film?
See if you can find out anything about the conditions under which the film was made. Apocalypse Now, for example, has an interesting production history, in terms of its financing, casting, writing, and so on. Knowing something about the film's production can help you to understand some of the aesthetic and cinematic choices that the director has made.What do the critics and scholars say?
Reading what others have said about the film before you see it may help you to focus your observations. If a film is particularly well known for the editing of a certain scene (the shower scene in Hitchcock's Psycho, for example), you'll want to pay close attention to the editing when you view the film.What can you learn from the film's genre?
Before you see the film, think a bit about the norms and limitations of its genre. When you view the film, you can then consider how these limitations are obeyed or stretched. For example, Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven is a western that challenges its genre's typical notions of good guy vs. bad guy. Knowing how this dynamic plays itself out in other westerns helps you to understand and to appreciate Eastwood's accomplishment.Does the film reflect an interesting cultural phenomenon?
Sometimes a professor will ask you to watch certain films because he wants you to examine a cultural phenomenon - for example, the phenomenon of stardom. Accordingly, you might watch The Scarlet Letter with the idea of viewing it as a "star vehicle," contributing to Demi Moore's star persona. Note that this sort of paper may also be a discussion of formal analysis: for example, you might discuss how Demi Moore was lit in certain scenes to emphasize her position as Hollywood star.
RESEARCH TIPS
The most important research tip that we can offer you here is: don't rely on the Internet. While the Internet can provide some interesting information about film, it generally doesn't provide you with the thoughtful analysis that will be useful to you in your work.
It's best, then, to take a trip to the library and to get your hands on books and journals.
WRITING TIPS
In many ways, writing a paper about film is no different from writing other kinds of papers in the Humanities. You need to focus your topic, write a good thesis sentence, settle on a structure, write clear and coherent paragraphs, and tend to matters of grammar and style.
In some other ways, however, writing a paper about film has some challenges of its own. We've collected a few tips here:
Don't simply summarize the film.
Your professors have seen the film; you don't need to recount the plot to them. They are looking for analysis, not summary.Don't simply summarize the use of camera angles or editing techniques.
You've annotated shot sequences in order to find something to say about them. Don't simply transcribe your annotation and call it a paper. Rather, posit something about what the director is trying to achieve, or the effect that this shot sequence has upon the audience.Don't limit yourself to a discussion of plot and characters.
Some students come to film criticism trying to employ the techniques they've used to analyze novels in their English classes. They focus on analyzing the characters, themes, and plot. Film Studies papers focus on different elements of composition, as discussed above.Avoid the "I."
It's too easy to slip into a subjective "reviewer's" stance when you use the "I" in your criticism. Try to find a more objective way of beginning your sentences than "I found" or "I feel."
CITING SOURCES
As in any discipline, it's essential to cite any sources that you use. Film critics cite sources using the citation method of the MLA (Modern Language Association).

GLOSSARY OF FILM TERMS*
A
- Accelerated Motion: Representing a shot as taking place at a higher speed than it did in reality. Also known as Fast Motion.
- Aspect Ratio: The height-to-width ratio of the projected screen image.
B
- Back Lighting: Lighting which comes from directly behind the subject, placing it in silhouette.
C
- Camera Angle: The position of the camera in relation to the subject determines the camera angle. High angle means that the camera is looking down at the subject. Low angle means that the camera is looking up at the subject.
- CinemaScope: 20th Century Fox's trade name for their widescreen process, which uses a ratio of 1:2.35. The term is commonly used to refer to similar widescreen processes.
- Cinema Verite: A way of filming real-life scenes without elaborate equipment, playing down the technical means of production (script, special lighting, etc.) and emphasizing the "reality" of the screen world.
- Close-Up: A shot in which a face or object fills the frame. Close-ups might be achieved by setting the camera close to the subject or by using a long focal-length lens.
- Composition: The arrangement of all the elements within the screen image to achieve a balance of light, mass, shadow, color, and movement.
- Continuity Editing: A style of editing that maintains a continuous and seemingly uninterrupted flow of action.
- Crane Shot: A moving shot taken on a specially constructed crane, usually from a high perspective.
- Cross-Cutting: Jumping back and forth between two or more locations, inviting us to find a relationship between two or more events.
- Cut:
- Noun: A transition made by editing two pieces of film together.
- Verb: To edit a film by selecting shots and splicing them together.
- Cutaway: In continuity editing, a shot that does not include any part of the preceding shot and that bridges a jump in time or other break in the continuous flow of action.
D
- Day for Night: Simulating night through use of filters and under-exposure.
- Decelerated Motion: Representing a shot as taking place at a slower speed than it did in reality. Also known as Slow Motion.
- Deep Focus: A technique in which objects in the foreground and the distant background appear in equally sharp focus.
- Depth of Field: Distance between the nearest and furthest points at which the screen image is in reasonably sharp focus.
- Dissolve: Editing technique in which one shot is gradually merged into the next by the superimposition of a fade-out or fade-in.
- Dolly Shot: A shot taken while the camera is in motion.
- Dub: To record dialogue or sound to match action in shots already filmed.
- Dutch Tilt: A wildly tilted image, in which the subject appears on the diagonal or off-balance.
E
- Edit: The splicing together of separate shots.
- Establishing Shot: A shot showing the location of the scene or the arrangement of the characters. Often the opening shot of a sequence.
- Extreme Long Shot: A shot notable because of the extreme distance between camera and subject.
- Eye-Level Shot: A shot taken at the height of normal vision.
F
- Fade: An optical event used as a transition, in which the image on screen gradually goes to black (fade-out) or emerges from black (fade-in).
- Fast Motion: See Accelerated Motion.
- Flat Lighting: The distribution of light within the image so that bright and dark tones are not highly contrasted.
- Flashback: A shot or sequence that takes the action of the story into the past.
- Flash-Forward: A shot or sequence that takes the action of the story into the future.
- Form Cut: A cut from one scene to the next on the basis of a similar geometrical, textural, or other compositional value.
- Frame:
- Noun: One single picture on a piece of motion picture film.
- Noun: The boundaries of the screen image.
- Verb: To compose a shot to include, exclude, or emphasize certain elements.
- Freeze-Frame: An optical effect in which the action appears to come to a dead stop, achieved by printing a single frame many times in succession.
G
- Glass Shot: A shot in which part of the background is painted or photographed in miniature on a glass lid and placed in front of the camera so as to blend in with the rest of the image.
H
- Hand-Held Shot: A shot made with the camera held in hand, not on a tripod or other stabilizing fixture.
- High-Angle Shot: See Camera Angle.
- High-Key Lighting: Distributing light within the image so that the bright tones predominate.
I
- Iris: A decorative transition in which the image seems to disappear within a growing or diminishing circle. Commonly used in silent films.
J
- Jump Cut: A cut that jumps forward within a single action, creating a sense of discontinuity.
L
- Long Shot: A shot taken with the camera at a distance from its subject.
M
- Mask Shot: A shot in which a portion of the image is blocked off by means of a matte over the lens, altering the shape of the frame.
- Medium Close-Up: A shot taken with the camera at a slight distance from the subject. In relation to an actor, "medium close-up" usually refers to a shot of the head, neck, and shoulders.
- Medium Long Shot: A shot taken with the camera at a distance from the subject, but closer than a long shot.
- Medium Shot: A shot taken with the camera at a mid-range point from the subject. In relation to an actor, "medium shot" usually refers to a shot from the waist or knees, up.
- Mise-en-Scene: A term used in the theater to refer to the staging of a scene, in relation to the setting, the arrangement of the actors, the lighting, etc. In film, the term is used to describe the arrangement of elements within the frame of a single shot.
- Montage:
- French: The joining together or splicing of shots or sequences - in a word, editing.
- American: A rapid succession of shots assembled, usually by means of super-impositions and/or dissolves, to convey a visual effect, such as the passing of time.
- Russian: The foundation of film art. "The building up of film from separate strips of raw material," or "An imagist transformation of the dialectical principles, montage as the collision of ideas and cinematographic conflicts." (Quoting Pudovkin and Eisenstein, respectively.)
- M.O.S.: "Mit Out Sound." These initials are written on the clapboard and are briefly filmed at the beginning of a shot to designate shooting without synchronous sound recording.
O
- Opticals: Any device carried out by the film laboratory and requiring the use of an optical printer. Dissolves, fades, and wipes fall under this category.
P
- Panning Shot: A shot in which the camera remains in place but moves horizontally on its axis so that the subject is constantly re-framed.
- Parallel Shot: When two pieces of action are presented alternately, to suggest that they occur simultaneously.
- Process Shot: See Rear Projection.
R
- Reaction Shot: A shot of a person reacting to the main action as a listener or spectator.
- Rear Projection: A trick shot in which the subject is filmed against a background that is itself a motion picture screen. Upon this screen another image - either moving or still - has been projected as a backdrop. Also known as a process shot.
- Reverse-Angle Shot: A shot taken by a camera positioned opposite from where the previous shot was taken.
S
- Score: Music composed for a film.
- Set: An artificially constructed environment in which action is photographed.
- Slow Motion: See Decelerated Motion.
- Soft Focus: A strategy whereby all objects appear soft because none are perfectly in focus. Used for romantic effect.
- Sound Track:
- A recording of the sound portion of a film.
- A narrow band along one side of a print of film in which sound is recorded.
- Split Screen: The division of the projected film frame into two or more sections, each containing a separate image.
- Stock Shot: A shot taken from a library of film footage, usually of famous people, places, or events.
- Subjective Shot: A shot that represents the point of view of a character. Often a reverse angle shot, preceded by a shot of the character as he or she glances off-screen.
- Superimposition: A shot in which one ore more images are printed on top of one another.
- Swish Pan: A shot in which the camera pans so rapidly that the image is blurred.
T
- Telephoto Shot: A shot in which a camera lens of longer-than-normal focal length is used so that the depth of the projected image appears compressed.
- Three-Shot: A shot encompassing three actors.
- Tilt Shot: A shot in which the camera remains in place but moves vertically on its access so that the subject is continually re-framed.
- Titles: Credits. In silent film, "titles" include the written commentary and dialogue spliced within the action.
- Tracking Shot: A shot in which the camera moves parallel to its moving subject.
- Travelling Shot: A shot taken from a moving object, such as a car or boat.
- Two-Shot: A shot encompassing two actors, often in close-up.
V
- Voice-Over: Commentary by an unseen character or narrator.
W
- Wide-Angle Shot: A shot in which a camera lens of shorter-than-normal focal length is employed so that the depth of the projected image seems protracted.
- Widescreen: Any aspect ratio wider than the 1:1.33 ration which dominated sound film before the 1950s and the introduction of CinemaScope, Techniscope, VistaVision, Panavision, and so on.
- Wipe: A transition from one shot to another in which one shot replaces another, horizontally or vertically.
Z
- Zoom: The simulation of camera movement toward or away from the subject by means of a lens of variable focal length.
