Monday: We will be talking about Kierkegaard and also introduce the research paper assignment that will dominate our consciousness for the rest of the semester.
Tuesday: Marx and Freud, Art and Aesthetics, Looking at the "Painting Imitation Project" Due next week
Wednesday: Today is a structured study hall. I have to take the morning to go to a few doctor's appointments so I won't be on campus until noon. You will need to bring work to do during class. This is not the time to catch up with your pals in class. This is a "pressure valve" intended to help you.
Thursday: More discussion about the "Painting Imitation Project" develop a timeline for the research paper and a look at some different ways yo interpret art.
Friday: Wrap up of "Free Will and Determinism"
OK, so here's the blog posting assignment for this week.
In many Buddhist, Taoist and Shinto traditions, importance is placed on living life as if you were creating art. That is, one should conduct themselves with a consciousness targeted towards aesthetics, ethics, and beauty. Now we are moving into a short unit on art interpretation, and to tie the "ethics heavy" discussions we've had these last weeks, I thought it would be useful to ask, "What does it mean to live your life as a work of art?"
When trying to live our lives as a work of art, we must understand what a work of art truly is. When art is brought up, most of us will think of a painting or a sculpture or maybe even a book, a dance, or a play. However, we are not told to live our lives as a piece of art, and art is not art because it exists--it is art because of how it exists. The phrase "work of art" is important, because art exists as pieces of work. A good painting is not made by an expert painter, it is maybe by an inspired one. True art takes work, it takes an active effort in which the artist pours his soul into his art, all of his hopes and dreams and emotions and skill--all of his inspirations and all of his stress, every fiber of his being is incorporated in one way or another. So, when asked to live our lives as a work of art, we are really being asked to live an inspired life, to be ourselves and to explore ourselves fully in our short time here on earth so that we can be the most authentic person we can.
ReplyDeleteElie,
ReplyDeleteI like what you said about art being art as a relationship to how it lives. It is true that inspiration is a major aspect of living a life of art, however, we must not neglect the aspects of plan, execution and perspective. Without plan, we get lost (a "code" can suffice as a synonym here), without execution, we are paralyzed and our endeavors remain vestigial, and without perspective, we get deluded into believing that the inevitable ugliness of the world is anything other than another aspect of beauty.
Good post Elie.
I suppose it is my time to offer thoughts on the blog post for this week. Art surrounds us. We are constantly faced with the intentional art of the creative class (music, painting, cinema, architecture, etc.). However, how often do we neglect the art of the act, the art that comes from the crafting of a dynamic and fulfilling life. There are no static sets of standards which define this type of life. It is a matter of an individual's situation and their character. It is up to us all to create our lives as art, even if this art is ignored or misunderstood by others.
ReplyDeleteIn a Dionysian perspective, art is meant to be as an experience, something brief and not made to be immortal. Human life fits into this category quite well. Since humans are so keen on attempting to run a marathon with life and hope they can make it through, there is little time to focus on the past, although that is not necessarily true nowadays with all the technological advancement in trying to reduce the amount of time that work can be done. Humans are complex creatures, emotions often influences decisions in everyday life. Humans are more inclined to think how something makes them field now, rather than in the past or future, although the past can influence future events. If one were to compare themselves on a global scale, they are only a tiny dot and their importance is not as significant as they thought it is. Humans aren’t made to be immortal, even though some may try to accomplish such things by doing something so profound, like setting a world record. However, if one just takes a look back at ancient sites where people used to live, one can infer that there is probably something archeologists have yet to discover. What if Plato’s work was forgotten? Would we even hear of him today? Ancient Egypt is another example. Kings get buried in the pyramids with their possessions, to show their importance, their rank versus the peasants, but at the same time, we know very little about them and what they do.

When we look back on the "intellectual history" of the Western world, one is struck by the sheer volume of materials that have been lost to time and decay. Just look at the Library at Alexandria. How much of the legacy of thought wafted up in the Egyptian air in the form of ashes? What is important is the living of life. Time phases out all human endeavor, so to live right within the present moment, that is one of the keys to living a "heroic" life.
ReplyDeleteWhen considering how to live life as a work of art, you have to think about the process creating a work of art. You have to view life as the final product of art you are trying to create. The living of life is where the art is being created.
ReplyDeleteIn creating a work of art, there is an enormous amount of attention to detail. Similarly, you must look at every aspect of life and act upon it, or think about every single action you make in life and view the bigger picture as to how this will affect your life. At the end of your life, you would want to say that you have created a masterpiece of art, explaining all the things you have done. Of course, there is no "delete" option in life as there is when creating art, but reflecting upon a certain outcome of life that you didn't like, you can act differently in the future in similar circumstances.
No artist is perfect. An artist's work may be the best in the world, but it is certainly not perfect. However, art requires the biggest effort possible given the materials and amount of time at hand. Likewise, no one's life is perfect. Reflecting upon life at the time of death, a person will have regrets and wishes to have the ability to go back in time and change some things just like an artist who critiques their work and wishes to have changed some things to make better art. Still, there is only one chance at life, and in a way, it is the biggest work of art in the world, because you are crafting each and every detail in your life.
-Abdulkarim Bora 1/2
I believe art is created with the intention of positively stimulating its audience. Subsequently, in my perspective, living your life as if you were creating art means to act as if faceless spectators were interpreting your life and you were trying to make a good impression. Introspective reflection is conducive to a flourishing self. It also incorporates an element of making your life as personally fulfilling as possible, because art is constantly striving for acceptance in the eyes of its own creator. Creating art requires a certain amount of deliberation and precise execution of technique. The same can be said for living an artistic life.
ReplyDeleteArt is something whether it be visual or musical that connects with one of the five senses to make you feel a certain way. Usually when reffering to a "work of art" ideas of skulpters or symphonies usually come to mind. When you live your life like a work of art, i would see it as being a person that effects others in an emotional way, or doing things that contribute to the making of art.

I would say living life like creating art means create life the way you want it created. Using the old saying "If you think it's art, then it is," if you have a vision of what life is supposed to be like in your eyes, then everything you do would be like each brushstroke on the painting of your life. And the mistakes one makes in life might be little rogue brushstrokes, and sometimes they can be covered up and sometimes they can't. But whatever kind of picture you have at the end is what you created through the course of time, and using that as a metaphor for life, whatever shape your life is in at the end is what you have created for yourself over time. So living life like making a work of art would mean shape your life into what you want it to look like, even though it might take a while to turn it into something beautiful.

When art is created, some form of thought must be incorporated into the effort to make the end product. In many great workings of art, the way that the sensual effect moves the subject is something out of the ordinary. All of the colors or notes, for example, fit and blend extremely well.
ReplyDeleteThis applies to real life also. A person must carefully execute the stroke of the brush that is their actions and thoughts in life. Once someone's life is finished, the components must blend to create a beautiful piece. Now, what makes each stroke beautiful depends on the ethics and morality of the person.
As art does, one's life needs to influence another's life in an emotional or thoughtful way. With new people comes new ideas, as with new art comes the same.
-Zach Krebs-Period 1/2
To live your life as a work of art can mean many different things depending on how you define the word “art.” The way I see it, art is anything that is always changing and there is always something new to learn about it. If I had a painting in my room that I looked at everyday, each day I would be able to find something new about it. The first day I might notice that there are people. The next day I might notice the color of the peoples’ clothes. The day after that I could see that there are flowers in the background. Each day there is something new to see and learn. Living life as a work of art is basically coming into each day ready to notice and learn something new as well as help to create new ideas just like the painter does while painting the picture.

In order to describe living your life as a work of art, you have to clear up what a work of art is. In my mind, a work of art is something that evokes music in the beholders. That being said, if you live your life like a work of art, you are inspiring others. You make people think, and you make yourself think. You make people happy; you make them angry. But you don't make them feel nothing.

When you look at your life like it's a work of art, you have to consider every action, or every "brushstroke", like it's an addition to the piece that will eventually be your whole life. If you do one bad thing, it's like a mistake that you've made on an important painting. It can be covered up by redemption, or it can stay there for ever, and even affect other actions you make. Also, like a painting, you should have a plan of some sort. You should never start on a blank canvas with absolutely no idea of what you're doing. Yet, at the same time, room for creativity should be left. As the kids say these days, "color outside of the lines".

I think to living your life as a work of art means you have to pay attention to the details. If an artist was to throw a bunch of paint on a canvas with no purpose or to draw a figure with no meaning it wouldn’t be considered art. We have to pick apart the different things in our lives and try to make everything we do beautiful and everything we do meaningful. At the same time we need to be original and respect authenticity and individuality. If everyone painted or drew the exact same thing nothing would stand out and “art” would be pointless and boring. In our lives we all need to think of our own ideas and be original not just a carbon copy of everything else around us.

Great Ideas 1/2
I think it means to live your life like someone is watching, because a work of art like a sculpture or a painting is meant to be seen and appreciated. This means that you should always act ethically so that the painting of your life reflects all of the good things you've done, but if all you do is bad then the painting isn't going to be a very pleasant one. Most people will act more ethically if someone is watching them, so then the people don't judge them to be an unethical person but rather a person who has their morals in alignment.
ReplyDeleteRebecca Gilson
Periods 1/2
In art, there are absolutely no rules. There are schools, there are movements, there are styles, but ultimately, it's up to the artist to decide. The same with lives. You have social conventions, you have laws, you have influences. But ultimately, your life is up to you. You can certainly choose to break the law. Criminals do. You can break social conventions, like hippies. You can get rid of your influences, and become, say a hermit. There is nothing stopping you but pressure.
ReplyDeleteAlso, in art, there is an emphasis on beauty, on enjoyment. What is the point of a work of, say, music, that isn't enjoyable? To live your life as a work of art, perhaps, also means to live it to make it enjoyable, to make it beautiful. Essentially, making it as Kirkegaard's aesthetic stage of moral stages.
-Arthur Lee 1/2
To live your life as a piece of art is to put meaning into your life and be an individual. Most high quality art exemplifies deep meanings and layers of symbolism. I believe that to live your life as a piece of art, you cannot be superficial. You must live life on a deeper level where you are completely authentic to yourself and others. This authenticity would be the deeper meaning because to discover ones true self, you must go through the outer layers of how one acts. Another key aspect of art is creativity. Whether this is creativity in style, subject, or meaning the art must in some way be individual. Living your life as art would involve being an individual rather than a mindless follower. If every piece of art was the same, there would be no appreciation of art for we would have seen it many times before. The same goes for people, we should all be individual and unique or the appreciation for life would disappear.
ReplyDeleteEmily Tubbs
Periods 1/2
One thing living your life as a piece of art could mean is to live in the moment. This is quite obvious because an art is a snapshot of one moment, and that moment doesn't change. It could also mean to live for beauty and for pleasure. Of course, art is meant to be pleasing to the eye, and one major purpose of art is entertainment, and therefore pleasure. Also, going back to a theme in existentialism, there is no exact idea a painter has when painting a picture. This means we should give meaning to our own life, as there is no predetermined meaning.
ReplyDeleteDillon Emberson
Period 5/6
When living life as a work of art, we are truly being asked to live our life in an entertaining fashion. We are being told to not live a boring life, instead to live a very beautiful, full of emotion life. A good piece of artwork is one that not only pretty in its own sense, but also have meaning and portray emotion by the artist. We are the “artists” of our own life, so we should be making the best of life, making it as beautiful as we can, full of colors. When an artist makes art, he puts emotions, hope, dreams into his piece; same thing with life. We need to add hope, dreams, and emotion to make the best of our life. This is what makes us all unique; the art(life) we make differs from each person.
ReplyDeleteAshvin Roharia
Period 1/2
When saying that ones life is like a work of art it's saying our life needs to have a meaning. If a work of art, play, sculpture is boring no one will want to watch or look at it. That's the same as with our life, if your boring no one will want to hang out with you, or if your unorigional. We are the artists in our lives. Like in a painting if the artist makes a mistake they try to correct that and the smaller the error the less likely it will be brought up in analysis. But if you make a big mistake it will be even harder to cover up. The goal when making art is to make it last throughout the centurys and that's one thing that would be nice to know in your life.

ReplyDeleteTo live your life like a work of art is saying that since a painting is bold with lots of color, your life should be like that. You should be living life to the fullest because you are expressing yourself just like you would in a painting. It also means that while you can find multiple meanings in a painting, you can do the same thing with life and those different meanings help contribute to the person you are.
ReplyDeleteKayley Treichel. Periods 1/2
To live your life like a work of art I think you have to be creative and enjoy life. By doing this you will create your own masterpiece with the amount of things you can look back on in life and remember the day you did an amazing thing. Every experience we have is a little piece that creates the person we are. So by expressing the qualities we earn through life we are being creative to a point in which we mold our lives into a great piece of work. A person doesn’t have to be creative with their choices of adventure because by just making daily choices they are still developing a creative side to their day. Which could then make a nice work of art.
ReplyDeleteEmily Steger 5/6
To live like a work of art is to put down our colors on the canvas of life and create a masterpiece. We interpret life as we see fit, and the decisions we make throughout life come from our interpretations of the world around us. Just as two artists may portray the same landscape in a vastly different way, we all interpret life differently, and live our lives accordingly.
ReplyDeleteLiving your life like art is taking those interpretations of the world around us, making decisions based on them, and putting your own unique way of viewing the world and living life down on your canvas. We all have a different set of moral values and ethics, and so we all view life through a different lens. We must, however, view life through our own authentic lens instead of someone else's to live our life truly authentically, like an original work of art.

Great Ideas-1/2
Universally, art is associated with beauty. And so, in trying to life like a piece of art, we strive for beauty. This is, however, not always simply the physical beauty of appearance, or auditory beauty of song, music, or speech, but also avoiding so called ugliness in our situations. When we describe a situation of ugly it is often of one with no right choice, or immensely complicated, so in life there is something to be said for the beauty of simplicity. This idea brings to mind the Japanese Geishas who were intended to be living works of arts.
ReplyDeleteWhen you are creating a work of art, there is a great deal of thought put into not making mistakes, and getting things right the first time. In life, this can be applied to think things through before making decisions in order to make sure that your choice is the right one.
Marci McClenon

The way I see it, the purpose of art is to bring about an emotion or a reaction from the viewer. In life, people try to get a response from the people they have relationships with through the decisions they make and the actions they perform. By living your life as a work of art, you try and get responses and emotions from the people around you, and these responses are what prompt the next decision you make. Since who you are is defined by the choices you make, and the choices you make are influenced by the reactions of those around you, by living your life as a work of art, you are defining who you are as a person.
ReplyDelete-Luisa Venegoni 5/6
The idea of living your life as a work of art bears great resemblance to the later developed philosophy of Existentialism. The idea is that your action define who you are. Using the art metaphor, every decision you make is like a brushstroke in a painting. At the end of life your decisions have defined who you are. What people need to remember is that every decision they make, no matter how superficial, defines them in some way. As in art, there are layers of symbolism created by the brushstrokes. This means that a small decision can affect how you will be perceived in the future even if it means little now. This also means that even the smallest mistake can take away from the overall beauty of your life. Seeing an erroneous stroke in painting ruins it. Therefore, to live your life as a work of art means to take time with your decisions to think about how they will define you in the future.

ReplyDeleteFor the comment above
Well first we need to define what “a work of art” really means. To me, a real work of art is done with meaning. All aspects of the piece of art have a purpose behind it and the piece itself is unique. It presents qualities that almost give the art piece itself personality. Now the question what does it mean to live your life as a work of art? It is very abstract to think of life as a piece of art but if you think of it as you are the painter and life is a painting then the idea becomes clearer. As the painter you are able to create the drawing, just as you are able to do what you want to do in life and create paths for yourself. Of course there are restrictions and limitations in life, just as a painter is limited on space, colors, material, etc, but you are still the author. Now as the artist, it is your responsibility to make your life a “work of art.” Just as a work of art has uniqueness, personality, meaning, and purpose, life should also follow these criteria. For your life to be unique, you need to be authentic; be yourself and don’t cover up who you really are with lies. For your life to have personality, be an individual; have people see you and notice you as an individual, not as a follower of a bigger crowd. For your life to have meaning, you need to leave a legacy in your life, or at least mean something to someone. This means not being selfish and caring for the goodwill of others. And last but not least, for your life to be purposeful, you need to follow and work hard to accomplish your dreams and goals. It is one thing to have meaning in life, but it is another thing to have a purpose. You have to have a purpose: contributions to the society or family. These four aspects create what I believe is living a life as a work of art.

I'm not exactly sure if should live our life as a work of art. Art is often beautiful, meaningful, interesting and open to interpretation. While most of these things that we associate with art would be good things to live by, we lose some of humanness. One of the things that is so at the core of the human condition is mistakes and failures and more importantly doing something about and our spontaneity. When i think of art i think of things that are static and unchanging and not to be touched and locked up in a museum. Arts something to be watched by others. We should not parade around pretending that we're the model for all human behavior. Trying to live life as a work of art, seems rather ignorance of everything around us. There is so much beauty in the world and i feel like treating us like a work of art completely over looks that. I mean of course we have to appreciate the beauty of mankind but that should be in comparison with the beauty of the world. Self reflection is never a bad thing but i also thing we should time observing others and nature and realizing how beautiful all that around us truly is. And not constantly thing about how to make our life a work of art.

Art, in my opinion, is anything that can affect other people emotionally, including the artist. Thus, to live as a work of art is to live to affect others, hopefully in a positive manner. Live to bring happiness and other such positive emotions to other people through your actions, and live to make yourself, the art and artist, an overall happier and more positive person.
ReplyDeleteI think that living your life as if it was a work of art has two meanings: as if you were creating art, and as if you were art. If you are living your life as if creating a work of art, to me, it means that you should use the same care and deliberation that a painter would use with every brushstroke on a canvas. Living as if you were painting a picture, crafting a sculpture, or creating some other masterpiece, would cause you to think more about your actions and choose paths that would ensure a more well-thought-out, more fulfilling life. If you lived as if your very life was a work of art, then you would try to make every decision the most beautiful, aesthetically pleasing, or meaningful decision possible. As in art, every choice would have a meaning, and in the end, the art that you create with your life would have a more defined path that employs several specific tactics for making that art the best that it can be.

Living life like a piece of art means taking in each emotion you are experiencing, and absorb it to the fullest. Whether you are sad, happy, or angry, to experience it completely. This way you would be really getting something out of life. Art is supposed to provoke emotion and thought, so doing this would be living life like a piece of art. Trying to achieve perfection in choices made, striving for an ideal life would be living life like a work of art since sometimes art is great because it seems “perfect.”

The first Merriam Webster definition of art is, “skill acquired by experience, study, or observation,” not the art as many perceive it: something aesthetic or of human imagination. I do not disagree that the later does not represent art in the created state, but with regards to living life as art, there is more to it than that. By the first definition, the skill and study is meant art as in the art of… (Any type of skill or state of being, but for the purposes of this discussion, life). These words conjure up in me an idea of computers or robots that absorb information like past trials and precedents in the world around them, to perfect their problem solving and/or actions, and in a sense we do the same thing.
ReplyDeleteTo live life as a work of art, I think, means to be constantly perfecting one's self to be a better person on any and all levels of depth. Aesthetically it could be grooming and clothing. Personality traits also are part of a person’s beauty so perfecting the way a person treats and deals with other people could be a way of making themselves a better product. Following moral and ethical codes purify the art that one is (spiritually or simply as a streamlining of the mind). The idea here is that to live life as a work of art means that one is constantly striving to improve. The desire, in this case, is just as important as the actual product because, to take an existentialist's point of view, one has no control over the body or container one is dealt, but one can control his “soul” or essence. A person’s choices are to the art that they are, as a stroke of a brush is to a painting.
To use the idea of art that I and most other people have as a product, art is something that comes from a person’s imagination or desires, and pleases at least the artist. For if art fulfills the purpose of making an impression on at least one person, then it has done its purpose. For us living artfully means that we can and should create ourselves, to the best of our abilities, in our own image, as the people we would like to be. Our job is not done until we are completely satisfied, because then, and only then, are we “defined.”

ReplyDeleteTo live your life as a work of art means to live a life thats worth being looked at and that will be appealing to someone in a symbolic or aesthetic way. But, to live it like art, we must know what art is. Art is something that has values to someone and i believe this quote means we should live like our life is valuable to someone. In ways it might be, if looking at it from a religious standpoint or from a personal standpoint. Your life may be valuable to your family, other people of God. Live your life like you want someone to ultimately remember you.

To live life as a work of art, you must always be evolving. Like art, the circumstances in life rarely stay the same, so you must adapt the way to react to them. Life then is about improvement. Though it may seem shallow, life is about you striving to become greater at something so that at the end of the day, there was something you accomplished. You must improve something. Isn't all art just the artist building upon work that has already been done, adding improvement as they see fit? I believe it is. These additions to art as the artist sees it can be compared to the additions we must make to our lives and the way we live them if we want to live life as a work of art.

Living life as a work of art to me means constructing life with elements of life. These so called elements include the morals of your life, your life's appearance, the value, the care, the structure, the complexity, the symbolism, the magnitude, and so many other components that go into the thing as vast and complicated as a life. But exactly like a piece of art, the artist interprets his or her own feelings and constructs based on decison making, as is the case in life. Through one's decisions, each and every one of these elements of life are decided, whether intentional or accidental.

To live as though your life is a work of art means living it with freedom. In many ways, art is an expression of emotion or an idea, and with this comes a vast expanse of freedom. Art is potentially infinite.
ReplyDeleteLiving your life as a work of art is living your life and making decisions with this freedom. It means breaking through boundaries regardless of social rules, and it means channeling your true, authentic self.
And it's okay if this lifestyle changes. Art is ever-changing, and so often it's fine for lifestyle changes to occur as they do in art.
Thomas Massad 1/2
Living life as a work of art to me means to directly and actively be involved in constructing your life just as an artist paints a painting on a canvas, or an architect plans and maps out the structure before executing the acting of building. You are the architect of your own life. Art has infinite possibilities. Anything can be called art but not all can be called "good" art. All artist's goal is to make good art and that is what people's goal in life should be; making your life a good art. That means being authentic, unique, and expresses your own thoughts, ideas and has emotion. Each color and each brush stroke of your painting is what makes up your life weather they were intentional or not.
ReplyDeleteArt is a very abstract word, and it has different meanings or definitions for different people. However, art usually serves a purpose, even if the only purpose is to release emotions that even the "artist" does not understand, but without meaning art is rendered useless. In terms of the buddhist monks, it is possible that they were feeding off this sense of purpose with art, striving to teach other people to live their life with a purpose. A large part of the Buddhist ideology is to become one with body, mind, and nature, often through meditation, and this could only be obtained by the individual themselves. This makes me believe that at least in the Buddhist sense, to live your life as a work of art is to become at peace with your actions, as you see them serving a greater good or purpose, even if you are the only one arriving at the conclusions. However, I think that great wisdom can be taken from the monks, and their idea of living life as a work of art can be still taken to heart today. Each person is unique and in some way different from the next person, and we each must paint our own paths, showing good judgment through respect, morality, hard work, etc. The main thing I believe is having a sense of respect for yourself and your actions, and also having complete responsibility. Artists will almost never disrespect their hard-to-make handcrafted art by ripping it up, defacing it or threatening it in any other way. The same can be said for life. To live your life as a work of art is to have respect for your own life with a sense of purpose or achievement, and the way to obtain this is to become responsible for your actions. By becoming responsible for your actions, you will begin to understand that you control your own life, only you can paint your canvas, and in the end it only matters if you can respect your painting.

If you lived your life as if creating art, your end result would be explainable only by you, and even then, you might not understand it all. If every event, every choice, that happened to you was incorporated into a painting, then your canvas would be covered in different colors and shapes that only you could recognize. The piece that you end up with is the combination and culmination of all these little varied aspects becoming a complete picture.

To live your life as if you were creating art would meant to live your life in a graceful, beautiful way that had an underlying theme that is you. In doing this, you act gracefully, appear attractive, make bold coices that resembly the heavy brushstrokes of a painting or drawing. However, it is hard to say exactly what this means because each peice of art is uniquie, whis is to day that every person is unique and it is key to live your life fully as you, eith your whole self in it, not halfway caring or faking anything.
